Why Inclusion Matters: New Vision’s Day at the SHRM Summit

On May 20, New Vision for Independence had the opportunity to help sponsor and participate in the SHRM Summit, a gathering of human resource professionals, employers, and community leaders from across Lake and Sumter Counties. The event provided an excellent platform to share our mission, connect with local employers, and advocate for greater workplace inclusion for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Representing New Vision, Jeri spent the day engaging with more than 60 attendees through networking opportunities, presentations, and interactive activities. One highlight was a bingo card challenge that encouraged participants to visit each vendor booth. This activity created meaningful opportunities for conversation and allowed Jeri to speak with nearly every attendee about the services New Vision provides and the capabilities of individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

These conversations helped address common misconceptions about blindness and employment. Attendees learned that people who are blind or visually impaired can perform many of the same job responsibilities as their sighted peers when provided with appropriate tools, training, and workplace accommodations. More importantly, they learned that these individuals bring valuable skills, perspectives, and talents that make them strong contributors to any organization.

As one of only three lunch sponsors, New Vision was also given the opportunity to present to the group and share more about our organization’s mission and impact. This platform allowed us to reach employers directly and encourage them to consider how they can build more inclusive workplaces.

New Vision's table at the SHRM Summit is seen. Pamphlets are lain out on a bright red table cloth and there is a white board with printed flyers hung up.

Beyond raising awareness, events like the SHRM Summit provide valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities employers face today. Understanding these evolving workplace trends helps New Vision continue developing programs and partnerships that support both job seekers and employers.

We are grateful to SHRM for the opportunity to participate and to everyone who took the time to learn more about our work. Every conversation helps move us closer to a future where individuals who are blind or visually impaired are recognized for their abilities, not limited by assumptions.

Together, we can continue breaking down barriers, expanding opportunities, and building communities where everyone has the chance to succeed.
