On July 21, New Vision for Independence welcomed community members, partners, elected officials, volunteers, and supporters to our Downtown Leesburg office for a special ribbon cutting ceremony in partnership with the Leesburg Area Chamber of Commerce.
The celebration marked three exciting milestones in our organization’s history: our 21st anniversary of serving individuals with vision loss, one year in our Downtown Leesburg location, and the official grand opening of the Curating Ability Gift Shop.
Throughout the morning, guests had the opportunity to tour our facility, learn more about our programs and services, and see firsthand how New Vision helps people who are blind or visually impaired gain the skills and confidence to live more independently. From independent living instruction and assistive technology to youth programming, support groups, advocacy, and community education, the event showcased the many ways our organization works to eliminate barriers to independence.
The ribbon was ceremonially cut by Board Chair Wanda McKenzie, joined by Friendraiser & Donor Relations Coordinator Joyce Walters, New Vision staff, board members, Chamber representatives, and a large gathering of community supporters. The turnout was a wonderful reminder of how much our community values accessibility, inclusion, and empowering people with vision loss.
Guests also had the opportunity to explore the Curating Ability Gift Shop, which features thoughtfully selected products that promote accessibility, celebrate disability pride, and support New Vision’s mission. The shop has become another way for community members to connect with our work while helping sustain the programs and services we provide.
One of the highlights of the celebration was enjoying cake pops prepared by students in our Teen Transition Program. As part of a work-based learning experience, the teens made the treats themselves, putting into practice the cooking, teamwork, and job readiness skills they are developing through New Vision’s youth services. It was a meaningful way for them to contribute to the celebration while showcasing the confidence and independence they continue to build.
As we reflect on 21 years of service, we’re grateful for everyone who has been part of our journey—from our clients and their families to our volunteers, donors, community partners, and supporters. Because of your encouragement and generosity, New Vision continues to expand opportunities for people with vision loss throughout Lake and Sumter counties, The Villages, and beyond.
